Air traffic rises 15% in December, SpiceJet registers highest percentage of cancellations
New Delhi: Domestic air passenger traffic increased by 15.29 percent in December to 64.40 lakh passengers — up from 55.86 lakh in the corresponding month last year, official data showed.According to data from the civil aviation ministry, passengers carried in 2014 rose 9.70 percent and stood at 673.83 lakh from 614.26 lakh ferried in 2013.
SpiceJet had the highest percent of cancellations at 31.95 percent followed by Air India’s domestic operations (2.92), Jet Airways (2.46), AirAsia India (1.92), JetLite (1.80), IndiGo (1.38) and GoAir at 1.29 percent.
“Overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of December 2014 has been 6.99 percent,” a statement said.
“The overall cancellation rate is high due to low visibility conditions at airports in northern India.
“High cancellation of SpiceJet is due to cancellation of a number of flights by it on account of financial difficulties.”
GoAir had the largest number of passenger complaints in the month under review at 6.2 percent out per 10,000 passengers.
It was followed by SpiceJet at 3.1 percent, Air India (2.1), AirAsia India (1.8), Jet Airways and JetLite combined (1.5), IndiGo (1) and Air Costa at 0.4 percent.
Low cost carrier IndiGo achieved the highest market share at 36.1 percent followed by Jet Airways (18.7), Air India (18.6), SpiceJet (10.4), GoAir (9.3) and JetLite (4.6 percent).
AirAsia India reported a market share of 1.1 percent. So did Air Costa.
Total market share for 2014 was also led by IndiGo at 31.8 percent, Air India (18.4), Jet Airways (17.4), SpiceJet (17.4), GoAir (9.2) and JetLite at 4.3 percent.
Air Costa’s market share for 2014 stood at 0.9 percent and AirAsia India had a market share of 0.5 percent.
