India will be affected by Microsoft’s decision to cut up to 18,000 jobs, or nearly 15 per cent of the software giant’s workforce, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter. While various accounts placed the number of job cuts in the company’s India workforce at around 100-150, a more detailed and confirmed scenario will appear in the coming weeks.

Talking to The Hindu, a company spokesperson said, “We can confirm that there will be some impact of the announcement in India. However, it will be minimal. We have about 6,500 employees here [including employees from Nokia] so in the context of the number of employees the impact will be minimal.”

The firm on Thursday announced the largest-ever job cuts in a move that is aimed at bringing about a more mobile and cloud-friendly organisation.

The employee reduction is also aimed at cutting the added workforce after Microsoft acquired the mobile phone unit of Finnish firm Nokia. Of the 18,000 job cuts, nearly 12,500 jobs will be axed at the Nokia Devices and Services unit, according to a company memo.
