BHUBANESWAR: Newly appointed Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan took charge of office on Tuesday.

After assuming charge, Pradhan told reporters that his focus would be to meet the expectations of the poor and middle-class people of the country. “India needs to reduce import dependence and secure energy needs, so that it becomes self-reliant,” he said. Pradhan said the Indian economy has an important role in the world economy, and he would endeavour to contribute to this effect. The Rajya Sabha member from Bihar said he would consult senior colleagues in the Government and formulate holistic policy in tune with the guidance and vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

People of the country have large expectations from the new Government and this Government is dedicated to the welfare of the poor. Earnest efforts will be made to bring the economy back on track of progress and development, he added.

Elected to the Rajya Sabha in March 2012 from Bihar state, Pradhan was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha from Deogarh. He is the son of former union minister Debendra Pradhan.
