University Education in India

University education in India is the final stage of degree courses. At the university level the students can avail both the degree and professional courses. In fact education in India has several levels or stages. These stages can be classified as pre-primary education, primary education, secondary education, undergraduate level and the university level. The Indian universities offer students the skills and knowledge that they need to be successful while working in different professional environments.

The universities in India are mainly of two types - the regular universities and the open universities. The open universities provide distance education to the students, who fail to attend the regular courses. Another classification can be done for the universities in India and this classification is according to the subjects they teach. The universities mainly offer various courses in the disciplines like Engineering and Technology, Computer Sciences, Information Technology, Biotechnology and Bio-informatics, Medical, Agriculture, Dairy Technology, Arts and Fine Arts, Commerce, Management, Hotel Management etc. Apart from these there are deemed universities in India too.

The main statutory body that governs all kinds of activities regarding university education in India is the University Grants Commission (UGC). It was constituted as a statutory body under an Act of Parliament, named the 'University Grants Commission Act, 1956' and it is the only grant-giving agency in India. UGC is responsible for coordination, determination and maintenance of standards, release of grants, for the universities in India. Another statutory body, the Professional Councils mainly bears the responsibilities for the recognition of courses, promotion of professional institutions and providing grants to undergraduate programmes and various awards. Apart from the UGC and Professional Councils, there is also a statutory body for each kind of university education in India. These bodies include the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Distance Education Council (DEC), the Indian Council for Agriculture Research (ICAR), the Bar Council of India (BCI), the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) etc.
