Shakira’s Facebook page has now reached more than 100 million likes, making her the most popular public figure on the social networking site.
The sudden increase in number of her Facebook followers was attributed to the massive success of her song “La La La (Brazil 2014),” which was one of the theme songs for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Variety reported. The “The Voice” coach’s top 20 Facebook posts so far have already drawn in 39.7 million likes. To date, her most-liked post was a photograph of her posing on the field of the Maracanã Stadium just before the World Cup final. The said post garnered more than 3.5 million likes in just four days.
To give thanks to her fans for her 100-million fan milestone on Facebook, the 37-year-old singer shared a video on the social networking site, which had received more than 162,000 likes within just one hour.
“100 million fans on Facebook. I mean that is incredible,” she said in the thank you-video she posted. “Thank you so much for your support, for your loyalty, for your love. It’s really unbelievable, thank you so much.”
In an email sent to The Wall Street Journal, Shakira called her 100 million Facebook likes “just an unfathomable number.” She added that it is something that she “never necessarily anticipated but a really welcoming and heartwarming surprise.”
Jan Rezab, chief executive of the social-media metrics company Socialbakers, told WSJ that Shakira’s international appeal, embodied by the soccer tournament, was the major factor that has boosted her social media success.
Shakira’s social media team, which was composed of two assistants and a supervisor, posts in several languages including, English, Spanish, German, French, Russian and many others, attracting more followers from different parts of the world.
But aside from her social media team, Shakira also makes her own posts. Posts that are signed with “Shak” mean that the singer herself composed the text, rather than her staff.
