MANAMA: Roadway surveillance is to be stepped up in a bid to ensure safety and reduce accidents.

More cameras will be installed on main roads across Bahrain to regulate the flow of traffic and crack down on violators.

Chaired by Deputy Premier Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, the Cabinet gave directives to speed up the establishment of a major surveillance centre to control traffic movement across Bahrain.

The steps were endorsed following a presentation made by Interior Minister Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

Addressing the session, he outlined statistics and facts on the reality of traffic in Bahrain, stressing future requirements and challenges.

He underscored the role of the new traffic law in toughening the crackdown on violations, enhancing road safety and reducing accidents.

The Cabinet urged to expedite privatisation of a number of services which are now undertaken by the General Directorate of Traffic.

It gave instructions to fast-track the issuance of the new traffic law and promote public awareness as to the importance of the new legislation.

The session also stressed the importance of addressing problems caused by old cars which break down repeatedly on main roads and cause traffic congestions.
