Guwahati –  The eleventh edition of the Assam Mahotsav, a two week long annual fair, was organized in Jorhat recently, and provided a window to the culture of the state.

More than 100 stalls were set up at the fair by participants from different parts of the country.

The stalls displayed a variety of indigenous products like handloom products, canes and bamboo and jewelery. The main objective of the festival is to promote and preserve the rich heritage of Assam.

It also provides a platform to local artisans to promote their skills and talent.

“Every year, I participate in the Assam Mahotsav festival, and this time also I am getting a good response. So, it is very good to participate,” said Sangita Saikia, Micro Entrepreneur

In addition to the fair, cultural programs, Mela, Seminars were also organized during the event.

The fair was organized under the aegis of INTANDEM.

“It feels good to come here. So many SHGs have come here. We get to see the various products that they have displayed here and get to know about the culture. Even the artisans get a good market here. So, it’s really good,” said Manoj, a visitor from New Delhi.

“There are lots of benefits of coming here. When we stay in our village, only nearby people get to know of us and come to buy our products. Here, people from different parts come and we get to know each other. I tell them that I have a shop and factory in my place. I have also given my card to all of them,” added Goleshwar Borah, a handicraft artisan.

Initiatives like the Assam Mahotsav certainly help raise awareness about the region and its communities.
