Melbourne – Men are increasing going under knife so as to increase their work opportunities, a researcher has said.

Dr Russell Knudsen, past president of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery, said that men want to look youthful for employment opportunities or to remain at the top of their field.

He said that appearance matters when men are looking for a job, particularly if they are over forty, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Knudsen said that men are becoming increasingly aware of the need to look beautiful, fresh and happy.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in the US, total cosmetic procedures for men rose 22 percent from 2000 to the end of 2012.

Geoffrey Lyons, President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, said that self confidence is one of the biggest ‘gains’ from cosmetic procedures.

He said that men going under the knife have often been bothered by a cosmetic ‘problem’ for many years, and seek to correct it to improve their self-esteem.

Lyons added that others may simply want to look younger and feel a ‘fresher’ look will help them in the workforce and socially.
