The Central Bureau of Investigation is learnt to have zeroed in on some of its own “disgruntled” officers who are suspected to have “leaked” internal communications pertaining to the 2G spectrum case investigation.

“The internal papers and file notings are being purloined by people from outside despite the fact that investigation-related documents cannot be shared even under the Right to Information Act. The officers who have done so undermine the hierarchical authority,” said a senior CBI officer.

An inquiry was under way to ascertain the identity of such officers, the officer said and added that these facts might be brought to the knowledge of the Supreme Court which was monitoring the case.

Bhushan Steel case

The agency had recently initiated another internal inquiry into the alleged defiance of instructions from CBI Director Ranjit Sinha that Bhushan Steel vice-chairman Neeraj Singhal, an accused in the Syndicate Bank bribery case, be arrested following a search on his premises. When the searches were conducted, Mr. Singhal was initially not arrested. He then went missing, but was arrested after some time.

“The officer concerned was identified and appropriate departmental action was taken against him. The inquiry revealed that the arrest was not made because of some misunderstanding,” said another officer.
