Authorities sounded high alert across Delhi on Monday with hundreds of policemen deployed at railway stations, railway stations, shopping malls and crowded markets in the wake of a terrorist attack in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district that left five people dead.

A burst tyre near Parliament also triggered panic and reports of an attack with security presence beefed up in the area but Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat confirmed there was no firing at Vijay Chowk near the Parliament.

Delhi administration has also flashed a special message through wireless sets to security forces that every vehicle coming from Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir should be manually checked before letting them enter the city. Police personnel have also been asked to search and frisk suspicious people and their belongings.

To check their preparedness to counter potential terror strikes in the city, the police are conducting mock drills in coordination with other agencies such as the fire department and hospitals. Security is being increased at all 180 police stations.
