Jayalalithaa announces Amma mobile phones for women groups
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced Amma mobile phone scheme for women self-help groups in her state.
Jayalalithaa’s government plans to spend Rs 15 crore to buy 20,000 Amma mobile phones with special software in Tamil for trainers of the women self-help groups.
Amma is how the AIADMK supremo is fondly known in Tamil Nadu. Jayalalithaa already has a series of schemes running in that name, with a subsidised chain of canteens for the poor being highly popular among them.In 2006, the rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rode to power in the state by promising free colour TV sets to BPL families that held ration cards.
