New Delhi – Defending Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for holding a protest on the streets of Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Yogendra Yadav said that a “CM sleeping on the road shows that he is available to the public”.

He also backed Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti for holding a midnight raid in Khirki extension in Malviya Nagar and said that there was no evidence against him. “Impression about Somnath Bharti during the midnight raid was mistaken. Prima facie there is no evidence against Somnath Bharti,” Yadav said adding that an independent inquiry had been set up to probe the case against him.

He also said that Bharti had acted on the complaints against drug trafficking and prostitution in the area that they had been receiving since a long time.

In conversation with CNN IBN’s Karan Thapar on Devil’s Advocate, Yadav called the Delhi Police being under the control of the Centre to be an “absolute absurdity”.

He also defended Kejriwal for his comments on the Republic Day celebrations and said that he had been quoted out of context. He clarified the Delhi CM’s remark and say that what he wanted to say was merely that a republic is about the powers and security of the people which should be granted to them. “The point Arvind Kejriwal made was what the republic is all about,” he said.

Though he also criticised the manner in which the republic day is celebrated and said “Soviet-style Republic Day parades are little outdated.

Yadav maintained that the AAP had no intentions of causing any trouble to the people of Delhi. He added that Delhi Metro was shut down by the Centre to restrict people from joining the protest. “We did not shut down metro stations. The CM constantly asked that the metros to be allowed to function. Metros were shut to stop people from joining the protest,” he said.

He advocated the manner in which the protest was held and said that if structures are to be moved, “it will only be changed by mobilisation that will involve street movements”. He also added that elected representatives in a government cannot be mute spectators.
