New York - US stocks opened lower Thursday amid data and euro concerns, Xinhua reported.
On the economic front, initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 386,000, the US labor department said.
However, euro concerns still drove the market downward after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said total debt liability would not be shared in her lifetime, giving little support to Italian and Spanish pleas for immediate action.
Investors now have little hope for the two-day European Summit starting Thursday.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 101.49 points, or 0.80 percent, at 12,525.52. The Standard & Poor's 500 was down 10.75 points, or 0.80 percent, to 1,321.00. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 32.65 points, or 1.12 percent, to 2,843.30.
