Dunlop has no immediate plan to reopen Bengal plant

Kolkata - Tyre maker Dunlop India Wednesday said it has no plans to reopen the Sahagunj unit in West Bengal and do so when the workers unions accept its proposal for a phased opening.

Operations at the factory in Hooghly district had remained suspended from October, 2011, despite several tripartite meetings among the representatives of the company, unions and the government.

"We have proposed to reopen the Sahagunj unit in phases. We held three tripartite meetings with the government and unions' representatives. But unions are sticking to their demand of reopening the plant with full workforce. We will again meet to resolve the issue. We have no option but to wait. We do not have any alternative plan as of now," Damodar Prasad Dani, non-executive director, said.

Dani chaired the company's annual general meeting here.

On the company's Ambattur plant in Tamil Nadu, which is also closed from February this year, Dani said the unions there approached the management for full and final settlement for all workers.

"Once the settlement is done, company will plan for future course of action," he said.

All the three members on Dunlop board -- Dani, Mohan Lall Chauhan and Subbaratnam Ravi -- are non-executive directors. Chauhan was present at Wednesday's AGM.
