Dhaka wants interim accord with Delhi on Teesta waters

Dhaka, March 14 (IANS) Bangladesh is seeking an interim arrangement with India on sharing of Teesta river waters until the two neighbours can strike a long-term agreement.

The next round of talks by the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) will be headed by ministers and is due to be held Wednesday in New Delhi.

Bangladesh Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen told New Age newspaper: "We are expecting an interim agreement for sharing Teesta waters during the upcoming talks."

The JRC is meeting after five years.

Asked if Dhaka received any indication about Delhi's 'political decision' in this regard, Sen referred to the joint communiqué issued by the prime ministers of Bangladesh and India during Sheikh Hasina's tour of India in January.

The two prime ministers reportedly expressed their political commitment to concluding talks on the sharing of Teesta waters 'expeditiously'.

Bangladesh and India share over 50 rivers.
