New Delhi, (IANS) The Indian Railways have lost Rs.500 crore due to destruction of property by Maoists and others, Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee told the Lok Sabha Monday.

"We lost Rs.500 crore last year due to owing to attack and destruction caused by the Maoists. Railway property is a easy target not only for them but for other people also," she said while getting her ministry's budget for the current fiscal passed.

Naxalites, bandhs and strikes have caused loss of nearly 40 percent of business of the Railways which covers a total route length of 64,000 kms across the country.

"We have lost about 40 per cent of our business due to Maoist violence and agitations like bandhs. These have hit our operations to a great extent," Banerjee had said in the Rajya Sabha last month.

The Railways' total revenue for the next fiscal is pegged at Rs.94,765 crore.

The Lok Sabha later passed the appropriation bill after discussion and voting on demand for grants for the railways for 2010-11.
