New Delhi (IANS) Noted industrialist V.N. Dalmia has been named to the University of Virginia Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees. Dalmia is the first Indian and only the third Asian to join the board.

"V.N. Dalmia will be a valuable addition to the board," said Darden's Dean, Robert F. Bruner, in a statement issued Thursday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

"As a student, he brought a wonderful global perspective to our classes, and his global leadership among our alumni continues to this day. VN has shown exceptional leadership in building our outreach to India and carrying the message about the value of MBA education and the distinctive place of the Darden School. We look forward to his contributions," Bruner added.

Dalmia, who serves as chairman of New Delhi-based Dalmia Continental Private Limited (DCPL), received his MBA from the Darden School in 1984. He is president of the Darden School's India Alumni Chapter.

DCPL, Dalmia's flagship company, owns Leonardo Olive Oil and Hudson Canola Oil - both market leaders in their categories. DCPL forms part of the Dalmia Group of companies which was founded by Dalmia's father, the industrialist Ramkrishna Dalmia, in the early 1930s as the Dalmia-Jain Group.

Dalmia is a Knight Commander of Italy having been awarded the "Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity" in recognition of his contribution to the development of friendly relations with Italy.

He is also president of the Indian Olive Association and executive vice president of the Babu Jagjivan Ram National Foundation, an autonomous organization of the Indian government dedicated to the uplift of the backward classes. He has previously been president of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (NIC).

In addition to the Darden School MBA, Dalmia received a degree in economics from the University of Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce.

Founded in 1954, the University of Virginia Darden School of Business is often ranked among the leading business schools of the world for its world-class MBA and Executive Education programmes.

Most recently, its MBA program was ranked no.1 in the world in General Management by the Financial Times; no.9 by Forbes and no.10 by The Wall Street Journal. Financial Times also ranked Darden Executive Education no.1 globally for its open-enrollment programmes, faculty and course design.

Darden's mission statement requires it to "improve society by developing principled leaders for the world of practical affairs".
