London - British women are heavily losing out their husbands at this time of the year to the ongoing Euro 2012 football tournament and watching romantic-comedy movies or "rom-coms" to pass the time.
According to LOVEFiLM, a British subsidiary of shopping website Amazon.com that provides home videos and video games through DVD by mail in Britain, Germany and Scandinavian countries, the percentage of people viewing romantic comedies has soared by 39 percent in the past week.
"Valentine's Day", starring Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway, has topped the rom-com list, followed by a selection of "chick-flicks" like "Leap Year", "It's Complicated" and "Did You Hear About The Morgans?" the Daily Express reported.
"Women are often relegated to the sidelines when it comes to finding different viewing options during sporting seasons like Euro 2012," said Helen Cowley, editor of LOVEFiLM.
"However, the rise in popularity of the rom-com titles available on our instant streaming service suggests that women are tackling the football frenzy and scoring themselves some light relief in the form of a good chick flick," she said.
The daily said TV watchers have gained weight watching the Euro 2012. Many people have gained upto three kg, according to nutritionists.
Fatty foods and beer are being blamed as the main culprits responsible for the weight gain. Sports enthusiasts are gorging over an estimated 3,500 calories per game.
The top 10 popular rom-coms are
1. Valentine's Day
2. Leap Year
3. It's Complicated
4. The Ugly Truth
5. Larry Crowne
6. Tim Burton's Corpse Bride
7. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
8. Did You Hear About The Morgans?
9. Get Over It
