UAE slaps over 1,400 fines for commercial fraud

Dubai - The UAE's ministry of economy, in a bid to combat commercial fraud, organised 19,000 inspections across the country this year and imposed over 1,400 fines.

Sultan Al Mansoori, minister of economy, said commercial fraud and counterfeiting have affected the country's economic growth as well as public safety.

Of the inspections, 8,072 were related to consumer protection, 10,063 were related to counterfeit goods, 558 to assess whether copyright laws were followed, 109 to ensure that trademark laws were being practised and 186 were tours to factories, a ministry statement said.

A total of 772 fines were issued in relation to consumer protection, 595 for counterfeit goods, 71 for copyright violations, 31 for trademark laws and four during the factory inspections.
