Dubai - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has demanded that NATO apologise to Pakistan for the deaths of 28 soldiers in an airstrike at a post along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
However, it denied that it had sought an extension from Pakistan to extend the deadline set on the US to vacate the Shamsi Airbase.
UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, who recently met the Pakistani leadership, said no discussion regarding the vacation of an airbase near Quetta had taken place.
The base is allegedly being used by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for a drone program inside Pakistan, and there have been reports that the Shamsi base was under the use of the government of UAE, The Nation reports.
The UAE Government has not confirmed or denied its ownership of the base.
“The UAE did not talk about the Shamsi Airbase, nor the Pakistan side talked about it,” Al-Nahyan said, adding that if NATO was using any of the facilities in Pakistan, it was for both sides to discuss.
Regretting the loss of lives in Pakistan, he said: “This is a mistake that we cannot accept. Anyone who loves Pakistan, cannot justify it.”
