Kabul - A total of 3,021 civilians were killed in terrorism-related violence in 2011 in Afghanistan, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in its annual report Saturday.
The figure indicates an eight percent increase compared with 2010, the UNAMA said. In 2010, a total of 2,790 civilians were killed in the war-ravaged country.
Some 2,332 civilians were killed by militants, 410 by Afghan and NATO-led coalition forces and 279 deaths were "unattributable", Xinhua reported quoting the report.
The toll from suicide bomb attacks also rose dramatically last year killing some 450 civilians, up 80 percent over 2010.
The UN mission has urged the militants, the Afghan and the NATO-led troops to avoid civilian casualties.
