Beijing - A man in southwest China has been detained for allegedly drowning his two-year-old stepdaughter in a washing machine to collect life insurance payouts.

Wang Bin, from Chongqing city, had debts of 40,000 yuan ($6,346). He is believed to have borrowed 2,500 yuan to buy insurance policies for the girl Jan 6, the Shanghai Times Saturday quoted the Chongqing Economic Times as saying.

Wang taught the girl to do laundry, and then a day after the policies took effect, he pushed her into the machine. He left the child struggling for her life while he joined his one-year-old son and unsuspecting wife Chen Hong.

After 20 minutes, Wang returned and raised the alarm. The child was already dead.

Wang called the police and asked them to issue a death certificate for insurance claim. However, police were suspicious and upon investigation they found out his crime.
