Saleh returns to Yemen for his successor's inauguration

Saleh returns to Yemen for his successor's inaugurationYemen's former ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh has returned to the country's capital of Sana’a from what he calls a "medical visit" to the United States after the Arab state held a sham election in which only one candidate ran for president.

Saleh is to take part in the inauguration of his deputy, Abd Rabbuh Mansur al-Hadi, as his successor.

Hadi was the single candidate in the presidential vote that took place on Tuesday, which was described by pundits as a mockery of democracy. He will lead Yemen for a two-year interim period.

Saleh handed over power to Hadi after receiving immunity from prosecution as part of a power transition deal brokered by the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council.

Saleh, a long-time US ally, traveled to the United States in late January for “medical treatment.”

Yemenis have called for the prosecution of the 69-year-old dictator for the killings of hundreds of protesters since the eruption of a popular revolution in the Arab country in January 2011.
