Bamako (Mali) - Democratically elected President of Mali, Amadou Toumani Toure, who has been in hiding ever since a coup last month, has handed over his resignation, a parliamentary official has claimed.
Issa Togo, the chief of staff of the National Assembly said that he received a phone call on Sunday informing him that Toure sent an emissary with a resignation letter.
Toure's resignation paves the way for a new interim president to be named in keeping with the constitution, Fox news reports.
Toure was just months from stepping down when armed army men stormed the presidential palace on March 21, toppling his government.
Meanwhile, the Mali coup leaders recently signed a deal with regional bloc Ecowas in which they would stand down and allow a transition to civilian rule.
In return, the bloc will lift trade and economic sanctions and grant amnesty to the ruling junta, mediators said.
