McCain slams ISI for alleged links with Haqqani network

Washington -US Republican Senator John McCain has slammed the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for its alleged links with the Haqqani network, and added that it is responsible for American deaths in Afghanistan.

McCain said he had sympathy for Pakistan’s military since the government is dysfunctional, but stressed that it remained a “source of never-ending frustration” that the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) had a continuous relationship with the Haqqani network, when the army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is responsible for appointing the ISI chief.

McCain said that the Pakistan Army’s best troops and equipment were on the border with India, and not Afghanistan.

The Express Tribune quoted him, as saying that the US should have a strategic partnership with Afghanistan and it would “demonstrate to Pakistan that continued support for the Taliban will leave them more isolated and less secure.”

Senator McCain said it was not an excuse for Pakistan to break ties with the Haqqani network.

He admitted that Kashmir, ‘one of the most beautiful places on earth’, remained a longstanding problem between India and Pakistan.
