Independent scientists to review IPCC report

Saturday - Feb 27, 2010, 04:58pm (GMT+5.5)

Bali, Feb 27 (IANS) A group of independent scientists will review the working and the reports of the  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the wake of mistakes being found in its 2007 report on global
warming, the UN Environment Programme announced here.

The IPCC has been facing flak since it was found in January that it had included an alarmist statement about the disappearance of Himalayan glaciers in its benchmark 2007 report.

Following that, a number of other findings in the reports have come under attack, though the IPCC, headed by R.K. Pachauri of New Delhi-based The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), has admitted to making a mistake only
over the Himalayan glaciers.

Still, with doubts being raised about the working of the IPCC, environment ministers from a number of countries attending a UNEP meeting at this Indonesian island "called for an independent review of the IPCC", a UNEP
spokesman said Friday.

"Full details of the review and its scope will be announced next week," the spokesman added. The group of scientists will present their report to an IPCC plenary session scheduled in South Korea this October.
