Amnesty orders Egyptian authorities to investigate Tahir Square's mob attack on women

Cairo -  Amnesty International has asked Egyptian authorities to probe alleged sexual assaults on women protesters during a rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday.

The London-based rights group claimed that the women, who were singled out by the mobs for sexual harassment and assaults at the epicenter of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak  last year, were attempted to intimidate women and prevent them from participating in public life.

In the face of a rise in violent attacks on women, female Egyptian activists, who had organized a rally at Tahir Square on Friday demanding an end to the women harassment, were attacked by  a group of men, who groped them and tore their clothes off, despite attempts to fend them off by male protesters.

According to CBS News, Amnesty claimed that the authorities never investigated the attacks.

Around 50 women participated in the rally, surrounded by a larger group of male supporters, and carried posters saying, "The people want to cut the hand of the sexual harasser".
