Washington - A former Al-Qaeda member, who is a detainee in Guantanamo Bay's detention camp, has been given a pet cat, as a reward for cooperating with the prison's officials.
While most prisoners who cooperate with authorities are given rewards such as cigarettes, better food, or perhaps an upgraded prison cell, officials in US military detention center have added 'pet cats' to the list of perks for the helpful detainees.
According to the Washington Post, Majid Khan, an alleged member of Al-Qaeda, who agreed to testify against one of the chief planners of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, has been considered as a "high-value" detainee and was held by the CIA in a secret prison for several years before his transfer to Guantanamo.
However, Khan's lawyer Carlos Warner claimed that the 'cat-as-reward' is just one of the problems plaguing the system that is being used to prosecute the detainees.
"I promise that the solution is not providing kittens to those who cooperate. The solution requires an open dialogue with those of us who have close relationships with the detained," he said.
