Kabul - At least 40 policemen were injured Monday when a protest against an anti-Islam movie turned violent, leading to clashes between police and protestors in the Afghan capital Kabul, police said.
"Up to 40 policemen were injured in protests against anti-Islam movie which were held on Pul-i-Charkhi road Monday morning," Kabul police chief, Mohammad Ayub Salangi, told reporters after the protests ended in different parts of Pul-i-Charkhi or Jalalabad road.
Salangi said more than 2,000 people came to the streets to register their protest that began around 7.30 a.m., reported Xinhua.
He did not say whether any protestors were wounded in the demonstration.
A police official told Xinhua that the demonstration was peaceful at the beginning, but protestors set on fire a police vehicle and damaged several shops besides attacking police with stones.
The angry protestors also attacked the Camp Phoenix, a NATO military installation in the area and pelted stones at guard towers.
Additional police force were deployed to stop the demonstrators from trying to break through the barricades on the road leading to the US embassy and several Afghan ministries.
Similar demonstration broke out in several Afghan cities Friday to condemn the film and urged the Afghan government to sever ties with the US.
