Seemingly unfazed at being ousted from the Asian Athletics Association, scam-tainted Suresh Kalmadi on Monday said losing the presidential re-election bid to Qatar’s Dahlan Jumaan Al-Hamad has actually given him a chance to work at the “grassroots” level.
“I have no issues today and I congratulate Mr Al-Hamad for being elected as President. I am rather relieved that I will be able to work at the grassroots level in athletics,” Mr. Kalmadi said after losing the vote during the ongoing AAA Congress in Pune.

Jayant Patel in limbo over manslaughter trial

Sydney - Indian-origin surgeon Jayant Patel remains in limbo over whether he will be forced to stand trial for the manslaughter of two patients almost a decade ago.

The Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday was told the Crown intended to prosecute Patel for causing grievous bodily harm to patient Ian Rodney Vowels during colon surgery.

Prosecutors said they also intended to proceed with other outstanding charges of fraud and the unlawful killing of patients Garry Kemps, 77, and James Phillips, 46, the Courier Mail reports.

However, lawyers for Patel said Queensland’s Director of Public Prosecutions Tony Moynihan, SC, had not yet responded to a submission requesting the manslaughter charges be withdrawn.

Patel applied to Moynihan to dismiss his outstanding manslaughter charges after a jury last month found him not guilty of unlawfully killing another patient, Mervyn John Morris, 75, in 2003, the report added.
