Pak Supreme Court seeks report over detained Indian fishermen

Islamabad (ANI) - The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan has ordered the Interior Ministry, the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Sindh government to submit a report on the detention of Indian fishermen in the country's jails by August 26.

This was announced by a three-member SC bench, which was hearing a petition filed by the Pakistani Fisher Folk Forum seeking the release of Indian fishermen.

The apex court asked the Sindh government to point out the law under which it had detained the fishermen, The Daily Times reports.

India and Pakistan frequently arrest each other's fishermen over violation of the maritime boundary, and hundreds of them are swapped regularly.

According to statistics, over 100 Pakistani fishermen are languishing in Indian jails while over 600 Indian fishermen are in Pakistani prisons.

They are still waiting to be deported back home as prisoner exchange agreements between Islamabad and New Delhi came to a halt after the November 26, 2008 terrorist attacks on Mumbai.
