London - Animal shelter chiefs in Utah, US, were left bewildered after a stray cat survived two trips to a gas chamber used to put animals to sleep.
Officials at West Valley City’s animal shelter in Utah say Andrea the cat had not been adopted for 30 days so employees took the decision to put her to sleep. But she survived, and they tried again.
After the second try shelter officials detected no vital signs and presumed she was dead, so they put her in a plastic bag in a cooler. But when they checked the bag, they saw she was still alive, but ill.
The shelter then decided to stop trying to euthanise her, the Daily Star reported.
“It was just one of those things where they thought this cat obviously really wants to live. Let’s give it a chance to find a permanent home,†West Valley City spokesman Aaron Crim told the Salt Lake Tribune.
A volunteer with the Community Animal Welfare Society has agreed to take care of the cat while shelter chiefs are investigating why the gassing failed, according to the newspaper.
“She’s pretty tough, obviously. She’s definitely got some will to live,†said Janita Coombs, who adopted Andrea told paper.
