London - New range of ready meals that can be stored at room temperature for up to 18 months are up for sale at supermarkets.
The newly launched ready meals offer advantages such as lower storage costs and lower risk of wastage than chilled alternatives, according to The Grocer, the magazine of the food and drink industry.
Critics have suggested consumers may be wary of the quality of ready meals with such long shelf lives, the magazine said.
But Princes, which makes the new range, believes the products are convenient for households that like to stock up, the Daily Mail reported.
The range includes chilli con carne, chicken curry, chicken supreme and beef in red wine with potato.
The meals are being sold in Tesco stores at 1.79 pounds for a 320g pack.
“We are combining our brand strength in the ambient sector with new product development than can drive frequency of purchase and incremental growth,†Princes marketing director Neil Brownbill told The Grocer.
