US women sue surgeon for posting breast pics online with names attached

New York - Several women from Missouri are taking legal action against their plastic surgeon, who inadvertently posted topless photos of them online that had their full real names attached.

A group of women are suing the St. Louis plastic surgeon after finding out that the so-called anonymous before-and-after photographs of their breast enhancement surgeries are showing up online in Google searches for their names.

According to the St. Louis Dispatch, more than 40 patients of Kirkwood, Missouri, doctor Michele Koo treated, were shocked to find topless images of themselves online linked to their names after undergoing plastic surgery, and at least 10 of them are suing the doctor for overexposing them, the New York Daily News reported.

In the suit filed against the doctor, the women allege Dr. Koo was negligent in allowing the pictures to be posted while still containing identifying information.

Lawyers for the doctor reportedly argue the fault lies with MedNet, the company that designed the website, while MedNet says Koo is responsible since the doctor’s office created the content.

“We’ve gone out of our way to advise them ... strenuously, to go check,” MedNet’s CEO John Pellman said.

He said that it was the individual doctors’ responsibility to make sure their content was anonymous.

Plastic surgery patients often consent to their images being used on doctors’ websites with the expectation that the pictures will be anonymous, and not reveal faces or names.

Neil Bruntrager, the lawyer representing eight of the women in the St. Louis lawsuit, said some of the women he’s spoken with only found out the images of themselves were out there when other people alerted them to their existence.
