Marriage `drives women to drink`

Saturday - Aug 18, 2012, 02:56pm (GMT+5.5)

London - Marriage leads women to consume more alcohol as compared to their unwed or divorced friends, it has been revealed.

On the other hand, married men tend to drink less after getting hitched.

“Women generally increase their intake to keep up with their other halves, while men cut back,” the Daily Express quoted Corinne Reczek from the University of Cincinnati as saying.

After divorce, however, men are much more likely than women to turn to alcohol.

“While couples may open a bottle or two together to share, it should be remembered that women have less tolerance to alcohol than men,” Emily Robinson, of Alcohol Concern, said.

The study has been presented to the American Sociological Association.
