London - Women are eating twice as many pies as men, with four in 10 saying they eat them each month, compared to two out of 10 males, a new survey has revealed.
The Asda study found a north-south divide with mince and onion pie tops in Scotland, and steak and kidney the number one choice south of the border.
But new gourmet pies such as minted lamb, chicken balti and spinach and leek have also been a hit.
Flaky summer weather puffed up sales of the filled pastries by 75 percent over the year.
“With the nights drawing in, we naturally seek comfort in indulgent foods that make us feel cosy and warm,†the Mirror quoted Asda pie expert Emma Ainley as saying.
“In the last few years we’ve really seen an increased appetite for new varieties of quality, gourmet pies from our shoppers,†she said.
The top 10 pies are:
1. Steak and kidney
2. Steak
3. Chicken
4. Chicken and mushroom
5. Lamb
6. Steak and ale
7. Mince and onion
8. Vegetable
9. Chicken and ham
10. Chicken, bacon and Leek
