Brit baby food tester gets tongue insured for £1m

London -  A baby food tester, whose skills allow her to identify any tastes that would be too overpowering for young tongues like tomatoes, is having her sensitive taste buds insured for 1 million pounds, it has been revealed.

Food nutritionist Beth Anderson is so good at her job as a baby food tester that her bosses want to insure her taste buds for a cool 1 million pounds.

The paperwork is now being drawn up to insure her tongue.

“There have been a few discussions going on. I’ve seen a contract outlining the terms of it,” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

“Although it seems quite bizarre to read, there are discussions happening.

“The wording is something like ‘suffering from permanent loss of taste’.

“If for any reason I lost the ability to taste, that’s when the insurance would come in,” she said.

The 24-year-old admits that there are some mornings when even she does not fancy tucking into a meal meant for a baby.

“Sometimes I have to taste a fish recipe first thing in the morning and the smell of that can be quite strong, but once you’ve tasted it, it is fine,” she said.

Originally from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, Beth has studied Food and Human Nutrition at Newcastle University.

Babies have more working taste buds than adults, making them more sensitive to stronger flavours, and Beth has been trained to taste food like a ten month old child, detecting flavours that other adults miss.

To protect her taste buds before a tasting session she has to avoid any strong tastes or smells like coffee and perfume.

Based at Cow and Gate’s Trowbridge HQ in Wiltshire, she also drinks plenty of water during the day to keep her palette cleansed.
