Calls to end ‘porn-driven’ genital reconstructive surgery

Melbourne - An increase in girls requesting genital cosmetic surgery has prompted calls to ban the procedure and bring in new laws to stop surgery regarded as unnecessary.

The Royal Children’s Hospital’s head of gynaecology, Sonia Grover, said there had been a significant rise in the number of girls requesting genital reconstructive surgery, Melbourne Tims Weekly reported.

Grover said that a substantial number of the young women, teenagers, seek the procedure because their mothers think their genitalia look abnormal and are requesting labiaplasties.

The number of labiaplasties and vulvoplasties claimed on Medicare has more than doubled in Victoria over the past 10 years – from 177 in 2002 to 430 last year. Of those patients, 24 were aged five to 14 and 593 were aged 15 to 24.

But the vice-president of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Ajay Rane, said the true number of children undergoing the procedure could be three times higher.

Professor Rane said this trend is being driven by a ‘‘culture of pornography’’.

Unnecessary surgery could put children at risk of nerve damage, scarring and narrowing, Professor Rane said.
