London (ANI) - The sale of bikinis for the over 50s has gone up ever since celebrities who are in the age group or over were seen sporting them.
Actresses Dame Helen Mirren, 65, Jerry Hall, 54, and Kim Catrall, 54, have contributed much to the rise in sale of the 'grankinis' after they were seen showing off their bikini bodies in a two-piece swimsuit.
A survey showed that 71 percent of customers aged 50 to 65 have replaced their one-piece with a bikini in the past few years ever since the two-piece swimsuit was made to suit more mature bodies.
The bikinis have wider straps, gauge wires and built-in mesh to support and shape the bust in the same way that lingerie does, while the bikini bottoms have higher waistlines.
Sales of the 'grankinis' have risen 118 percent in two years at Debenhams.
"A full costume on an older lady instantly says "granny", but a supportive, well-proportioned bikini is less ageing and accentuates rather than hides natural shape," the Daily Mail quoted Sasha Nagalingham, the store's swimwear buyer, as saying.
