New Delhi,(IANS) The government is considering proposals from four state governments to rename their high courts based on the new names of their capitals, a Right To Information query has revealed.

The government is considering changing the names of Bombay High Court to Mumbai High Court, Calcutta High Court to Kolkata High Court, Madras High Court to Chennai High Court, and Gauhati High Court to Guwahati High Court.

This has been revealed by the union law ministry in a plea for information on the proposal to change the names of the high courts. The plea has been made by Delhi resident Subhash Chandra Agrawal.

In his query, Agrawal had also asked if the high courts can frame different rules for processing RTI applications sent to them.

The ministry forwarded the request regarding the rules to the Department of Personnel and Training, saying, "The Department of Justice is not concerned with framing of the Rules under the RTI Act, 2005. Both Bombay and Madras were renamed in 1996. Kolkata got the new name in 2001."
