Guwahati - A stray leopard created panic in Assam's main city here Friday by injuring three people in the second incident of its kind in less than two weeks.

The leopard strayed into Pandu area on the foothills of Nilachal Hills, Divisional Forest Officer S.K. Seal Sarma told IANS.

"We have sent a party to tranquilize the leopard," he said, adding the animal may have gone back to the jungle.

Police confirmed that three people were injured in the attack and admitted to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

On Jan 7, another leopard strayed into the city's Silpukhuri area and injured three people, one of whom died later.

There are several incidents of leopards straying into human habitation from shrinking wildlife space in search of food.

Leopards are an endangered species and protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
