New Delhi - Tihar Jail here recorded a turnover of Rs.15.25 crore in 2011 from selling products made by prisoners, ranging from sweets and cookies to textiles and even furniture.
The products, increasingly sought after across the city, go under the brand name TJ.
“In 2011, the turnover was Rs.15.25 crore against Rs.13 crore in 2010,"
Director General (Prisons) Neeraj Kumar said Tuesday.
Food items, furniture and clothes made by the prisoners are told through outlets in Delhi and adjoining towns such as Noida and Gurgaon.
The Tihar Jail has started its own retail outlet at Select City Walk Mall in south Delhi.
Tihar Jail products have also been showcased at various exhibitions and fairs. At the India International Trade fair here last year, TJ's products worth 4.45 lakhs were sold.
“The target for the next financial year is fixed for Rs.25 crore for sale of factory items and Rs.4 crore for bakery,” said Kumar.
The Tihar Jail has around 12,000 prisoners, double its capacity.
