New Delhi - India has the political will to bring change that can help abolish evils like child marriage, Nobel laureate and South African anti-apartheid icon archbishop Desmond Tutu said here Thursday.
“There is a political will in the country to bring change. It is heartening to see government and voluntary organisations come forward for an effort like abolishing child marriage,” Tutu said at a press conference.
“Young people are willing to make the change happen. I was impressed to see young people working hard to stop child marriages in Bihar,” Tutu added.
Tutu lead a team of world leaders, called The Elders, to Bihar Feb 7 to create awareness against child marriages.
“Bihar happens to be one of the Indian states with the highest prevalence (69 percent) of marriages among girls under 18," Tutu added.
He said his team was encouraged by leaders in Patna and national capital to fight the menace.
