Kolkata -  The Calcutta High Court Friday banned the entry of devotees to the 'Garbha Griha' (sanctum sanctorum) of Kalighat Kali Temple, saying the large number of visits was defacing the  shrine.

A division bench of Chief Justice J.N. Patel and Justice Sambuddha Chakrabarti, however, allowed any two priests on a day to enter the Garbha Griha to make the holy offerings to the deity  and ordered the temple authorities to prepare a list of priests who shall be entrusted with the task.

The court's order came while hearing a public interest litigation filed by Surabhi Basu and B.R. Goenka.

The petitioners, contending that the entry of the devotees was not only resulting in defacement of the place but was also hurting its sanctity, prayed for an order prohibiting the entry of the  devotees.

It also asked the temple to display the list of the priests on the outer wall of the sanctorum.

An assistant police commissioner the city's deputy commissioner (South) will have overall responsibility for the temple's security.
