Shillong - One person was critically wounded as rebels of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) opened fire in a market in the district headquarters of Meghalaya's East Garo Hills, police said.
Security forces' operations against the outlawed group meanwhile continued, a police officer said.
"Four GNLA rebels came from across the Simsang river and suddenly opened fire in a crowded Williamnagar market," Inspector General of Police (western range) F.D. Sangma told IANS.
A man, named Johirul Islam, was critically injured in the attack and was taken to hospital, Sangma said.
"These acts of GNLA are signs of desperation and this attack was aimed at creating fear psychosis in the minds of the people," Sangma said.
On Thursday night, the GNLA killed three people, including a school teacher, accusing them of being police spies in East Garo Hills district.
Police have denied that the trio were working for the police in the fight against the GNLA.
The GNLA, which is headed by rogue police officer-turned rebel R. Sangma, has unleashed a reign of terror in the three impoverished districts of Garo Hills in western Meghalaya.
More than 30 people, including security personnel, have been killed in the area in the last one year by the rebels.
