Police told to produce missing man or his body

Gurgaon -  A Haryana government grievance committee Friday told the police to trace a man missing for over two years or produce his body within two months after his mother  alleged that police had cremated her son's body, an official said.

Bharat Bhushan, 32, who worked in a Delhi court went missing May 12, 2010. His mother, Narmada Devi, filed a police complaint.

On May 13, an unidentified body was found in a water supply canal in Gurgaon. Three says later, the police cremated the body, since it was lying unclaimed.

However, the same day, after the cremation, Narmada Devi said it was her son's body.

To verify this, police sent samples of Narmada Devi's DNA to a lab in Karnal. Her samples failed to match with that of the body.

But Narmada Devi produced a steel rod found in the body's ashes, saying it was her son's. She said doctors had fitted the rod into his leg after an accident.

When police approached the doctors of the hospital in Delhi, they could not confirm that it was the same rod that was placed in Bharat Bhushan's leg.

However, after repeated efforts of Narmada Devi, the police in Oct 2011 filed a case of murder against three people of Bhusan's Budheda village here.

But after the police conducted polygraph tests on the accused, they were not found involved in the case.

Finally, the case was brought to notice of the grievance committee headed by Harayana Chief Parliamentary Secretary Prahlad Singh Gillakhera with several district officials as members.

The case has now been handed over to Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Vikas Dhankar and the report has to be submitted in two months.

"We have to work on two angles. First, where is the missing man? And if he is dead, where is the body? Second, whose body was cremated that day?" Dhankar told IANS.
