Mumbai lawyer murder: Accused to be produced in court today
Mumbai - Sajjad Ahmed, the security guard who admitted to killing lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha at her Mumbai residence, will be produced in court on Saturday.

Ahmed reportedly slit Pallavi's throat after a failed rape attempt.

He told police that he had wanted to take revenge as Pallavi had yelled at him a few days ago.

Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Mumbai Himanshu Roy said, "The motive is perversion, heinous perversion. This is a cold blooded pre-meditated murder."

Pallavi, a legal advisor with a film production company, lived with her lawyer boyfriend Avik Sengupta in the building.

On the night of the murder, Pallavi was alone at her apartment.

Ahmed, knowing that Pallavi's boyfriend wasn't home, disconnected the power supply to her apartment. Pallavi then called the electrician for assistance.

Sajjad accompanied the electrician to her house. Once the supply was restored the two left. Sajjad then cut the power connection again. This time too, he accompanied the electrician. He then stole the keys to the apartment that were lying on the table.

Later that night, he used the keys to enter the apartment. He then attempted to molest Pallavi. The young lawyer fought back.

In the struggle that ensued, Pallavi made an attempt to ring the neighbour's doorbell. But help wasn't to come.

Ahmed then slit her throat with a kitchen knife.

The incident has brought disturbing questions about the safety of women in the city. It was the third murder of a woman in her apartment in the city in three months.

The Mumbai Police has admitted that there is need to review security measures.
