Bengal Congress to protest arrests of party cadres

Kolkata -  Giving another jolt to its already alienated ally Trinamool Congress, the Congress Friday said it would submit protests Aug 24 to all police stations in West Bengal against the arrests of its functionaries.

Hooghly district Congress president Dilip Nath was arrested along with his supporters Wednesday for putting a road blockade to protest the murder of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) leader Dilip Paswan.

Paswan was shot dead by unidentified assailants Tuesday in Bandel, around 60 km from here.

Over 20 people, including 16 policemen, were injured in Hooghly district in clashes between supporters of the INTUC leader and police.

The Congress alleged that although supporters of the Trinamool Congress and other parties as also local residents were involved in the incident, police have only arrested Congress cadres.

"Only our supporters were arrested. Police also held our district secretary. But no Trinamool cadre was arrested in connection with the incident, although they were also present in the melee," state Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya said.

"We urge all the Congress workers in the state to give deputations to every police station to protest against the arrest," Bhattacharya added.
