Mumbai - Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi walked out of the Arthur Road jail here on Wednesday, three days after he was charged with sedition.
Trivedi, an activist of India Against Corruption (IAC), had been given bail on Tuesday.
The Kanpur-based artist, who received a hero's welcome by crowds waving India flags outside the jail, said the battle against sedition law and oppressive behaviour by government would continue.
Earlier, he was reluctant to come out of jail unless all charges levelled against him are dropped but he finally agreed to accept bail on Tuesday. Notably, State Home Minister RR Patil has promised to get the sedition charge dropped.
A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Nitin Jamdar directed Trivedi to be released on execution of a personal bail-bond of Rs 5,000.
The court will make a decision on removal of the sedition charge by September 17.
In the meantime, a news channel has claimed that the Maharashtra government may probably drop the charges against the cartoonist.
Trivedi was arrested on Saturday for allegedly depicting the national emblem and Parliament in bad light in his cartoons during Anna Hazare' anti-corruption movement in Mumbai in December 2011.The Mumbai police have come under flak for this action from several quarters.
