Elephants destroy crops, trample man to death in Jharkhand

Sunday - Nov 18, 2012, 05:47pm (GMT+5.5)

Ramgarh (Jharkhand) - A herd of elephants strayed into a village in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh District over the weekend, destroyed crops and trampled a man to death.

Paddy crops spread over 10 hectares was destroyed during the rampage, causing a huge loss to the farming community of the area.

Villagers blamed forest rangers for not being able to prevent the elephants from straying towards human habitation.

Environmentalists and other experts have attributed the rise of such incidents to human encroachment and decreasing forest cover due to which elephants have started venturing more frequently into human inhabited places.

India has over 50 per cent of Asiatic elephants, considered to be among the most intelligent animals. Unfortunately, the number of elephants has dwindled in recent years.
